Tosoh Continues to Forge Stronger Specialties
Rinkagaku Kogyo Becomes Wholly Owned Subsidiary

Tokyo, Japan – Tosoh Corporation announced that Rinkagaku Kogyo Co., Ltd. (Rinkagaku) became a wholly owned subsidiary when the remaining 40% of shares were acquired.  Rinkagaku, a large Japanese manufacturer of phosphoric acid, red phosphorous, and phosphates, will bring even greater technological strength and synergy to Tosoh’s specialties.  Tosoh operations that utilize phosphoric acid will particularly become more cost competitive through closer collaboration with Rinkagaku.

In recent years Rinkagaku has responded to the increased demand for applications used in the liquid crystal display (LCD) and semiconductor industries with expansion of high purity phosphoric acid facilities and investment in value added operations.  Rinkagaku specializes in both the wet and dry method for the production of phosphoric acid.  The dry-process phosphoric acid is used in the manufacture of LCDs and semiconductors, added to various beverages as a pH adjuster, and improves water retention for cosmetics.  The wet-process phosphoric acid is used as a base material for toothpaste, in the food manufacturing industry, and in metal cleaning and surface treatments.

Overwhelming demand in electric and electronic related industries was cited as one of the main reasons for Rinkagaku to invest JPY one billion in red phosphorous operations in 2002. Red phosphorous has significant advantages over more traditional halogenated flame retardant additives. A unique micro-encapsulating process creates a powerful flame retardant additive that is highly stable, moisture and friction resistant, and increases value for end-use applications.  Red phosphorous protects synthetic polymer resins most commonly used in a wide array of products from electrical components to insulation materials, household appliances, and surface coatings.  The Company’s phosphates are used in the food industry in the production of preservatives.
Now as a full-fledge member of the Tosoh Group, Rinkagaku Kogyo will continue to develop value-added products that cater to the needs of customers in Japan and abroad.
