Tokyo, Japan— Tosoh Quartz Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tosoh Corporation headquartered in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, announced, that it will construct a new manufacturing facility at its Yamagata-based Yonezawa Factory. The new facility is Tosoh Quartz Corporation’s response to the global expansion of the semiconductor market and is expected to be in operation in February 2019. Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2018 and will cost approximately 4 billion yen.
The global semiconductor market has expanded in recent years because of such factors as increasing storage capacity of smartphones and heightened demand from data centers. Sharp rises in demand are forecast for semiconductors for IoT-enabled devices and for AI applications. Demand for semiconductors for in-vehicle systems is also expected to grow with advancements made in electric vehicle and autonomous-driving technologies.
When completed, Tosoh Quartz Corporation’s new facility will enable it and the Tosoh Group to meet the expanding demand for semiconductors equipment parts worldwide. The new facility will feature the latest equipment and a floor area of 3,900 square meters. The facility will contribute to a supply structure capable of handling the growth in demand. It, in turn, will strengthen the profitability of Tosoh’s Advanced Materials Division, of which Tosoh Quartz Corporation is a part.
