Tosoh to Share Power among Facilities

Tokyo, Japan — Japanese authorities and power companies in Japan have announced that there could be electrical power shortages during the summer. In an attempt to lessen the burden on regional power companies and make more efficient use of all available power, the authorities have requested all users to implement power saving measures. The Japanese government policy however considers a company to have saved energy if it shares surplus power from one facility with another in a different region. Tosoh Corporation therefore plans to start sharing electricity among its facilities by sending surplus power from one of its plants in Yamaguchi Prefecture to other of its facilities in Kyushu.

Tosoh’s coal-fueled generator at its Nanyo Complex in Yamaguchi has an output capacity of 829,100 kW. From July 2 to September 7, the company will send a total of 10,500 kW in surplus power from that generator to two of its Kyushu factories that produce manganese dioxide and other chemicals.

Tosoh will enter into a contract with Chugoku Electric Power Company and Kyushu Electric Power Company to implement the power-sharing scheme. The company will also sell up to 50,000 kW to Chugoku Electric as requested by the utility. The two firms are discussing an arrangement that will see Tosoh continue supplying power from the Nanyo Complex to Chugoku Electric until Spring 2013.

Tosoh Corporation group company, Tohoku Tosoh Chemical, Co., Ltd., in Yamagata, also entered a similar agreement in September of 2011 with Tohoku Electric Power Company in northern Japan. Under the agreement, Tohoku Tosoh Chemical supplies a maximum of 20,000 kW to the electric power company and plans to continue.
