Tosoh to Build New High-silica Zeolite Plant Overseas

Tokyo, Japan—Tosoh Corporation, in response to vigorous demand in Japan, the US and Europe and future demand in Asia, will construct a new facility in Malaysia for producing high-silica zeolite (HSZ®), a type of synthetic zeolite. Tosoh currently manufactures HSZ at its Nanyo Complex (Shunan, Yamaguchi Prefecture) and Yokkaichi Complex (Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture) and sells to customers worldwide for a variety of environmental and industrial applications.

From the viewpoints of lessened exchange rate fluctuation risk, strong overseas demand and of business continuity, the company decided that its new plant will be built overseas and ready for commercial production by the middle of 2017.

More information about HSZ and the plant's construction as follows.

HSZ is a synthetic zeolite, produced from silica and alumina, that has the appearance of a white powder. HSZ's characteristics include strong adsorption and resistance to heat and acid. It's catalytic properties comes into play in aiding the cleaning of automobile exhaust gas and removal of volatile organic compounds. HSZ is also used as an oil refining and petrochemical catalyst.

Demand for HSZ as an automobile exhaust cleaning catalyst is on the rise in the US, Europe and Japan as a result of stricter emissions regulations.

Tosoh first started manufacturing HSZ in 1986 at the company's Nanyo Complex. In 2009, Tosoh built a new HSZ plant at its Yokkaichi Complex. In 2013, manufacturing capacity was increased at the Yokkaichi Complex's facility, adding 50% to Tosoh's total HSZ manufacturing capacity. In 2014, a manufacturing capacity increase at the Nanyo Complex facility added another 50% to Tosoh's total HSZ manufacturing capacity.

Tosoh's new HSZ plant will be built in the Kemaman district of Malaysia's state of Terengganu at an investment of ¥11.0 billion. The new plant, whose construction is scheduled to start April 2015 and finish November 2016, will increase Tosoh's total HSZ manufacturing capacity (vs. total capacity at the time of this writing) by 40%.
