Tosoh Signs Agreement on Use of Woody Biomass Fuel

Tokyo, Japan— On January 27, 2021, Tosoh Corporation signed an agreement with Yamaguchi Prefecture’s Shunan City and Shunan City company Izumi Sangyo Co., Ltd., for the use of wood pruned from trees at public facilities in Shunan City. Tosoh will use the wood as biomass to fuel the in-house power generating plant at its Shunan City-based Nanyo Complex. The agreement takes effect on April 1, 2021.

Under the agreement, Izumi Sangyo will process wood from trees pruned at public facilities in Shunan City into chips at its Shunan Biomass Center. It will then transport the wood chips to the Nanyo Complex, which will co-fire the woody biomass with coal to fuel its power plant. The Nanyo Complex will thereby reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Tosoh believes that its efforts to reduce GHG emissions—a key driver of climate change—will lead to the medium- to long-term growth of its business. The company therefore contributes to the development of a sustainable society. It promotes technological developments that improve energy use efficiency, reduce GHG emissions, and recover and convert carbon dioxide into raw materials.
