Tosoh Corporation Announces Its Group Carbon Neutral Policy

Tokyo, Japan—Tosoh Corporation has devised the following policy to achieve carbon neutrality.

1. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) as the major driver of climate change is a social challenge that represents one of the greatest concerns globally. In response to the Japanese government’s 2050 Carbon Neutral Declaration and revision of its fiscal 2031 GHG emissions reduction target, Tosoh Corporation has crafted a GHG reduction policy for the Tosoh Group.

Reduce GHG emissions 30% on fiscal 2019 by fiscal 2031
Achieve carbon neutrality by 2050

GHG emissions reduction measures

a. Pursue energy conservation

Tosoh utilizes internal carbon pricing to assess the cost of varying levels of GHG emissions as a reference point for investment decisions. We will raise our unit pricing to further our energy conservation efforts.

 b. Decarbonize the energy we use

Our major GHG emissions reduction target is to reduce the CO2 emitted from our in-house thermal power generation facilities. We will progressively phase out coal and other fossil fuels that produce large quantities of GHGs, replacing them with biomass, liquefied natural gas, and CO2-free hydrogen and ammonia and the like. We will also step up our efforts to introduce renewable energies, such as solar, to decarbonize the energy used by the Tosoh Group.

 c. CO2 capture and use

Tosoh has teamed with external research institutions and the Japanese government to develop technologies that separate and capture the CO2 emitted by power generation facilities and production processes. Those technologies will also make possible the use of that CO2 as a raw material in manufacturing polyurethane and other products.

 d. Invest in GHG emissions reduction

To fund these measures, Tosoh will invest around ¥120 billion. We will invest about ¥60 billion of that sum immediately over the three years from fiscal 2023 through fiscal 2025.

 2. Contribution to society through GHG-reducing products and technologies

Tosoh Group measures to lower the GHGs from its manufacturing activities extend to the provision of sustainable products and technologies that contribute to society by reducing GHG emissions across the supply chain.

Product and technology targets

Social contribution

Rigid urethane foam (heat insulation material)
Polyvinyl chloride (plastic sashes)

High-performance external thermal insulation materials, including for insulated windows, contribute to the spread of energy-efficient and even zero-energy housing.

Amines for CO2 capture

The limited degradation of amines in the presence of the nitrogen oxides and more in exhaust gas facilitates their use in capturing CO2 from a wide range of exhaust gases.

Energy-saving electrolysis technologies

A jointly developed ion exchange membrane electrolytic cell for caustic soda manufacturing licensed to companies worldwide contributes to energy conservation globally.

3. Promotion system

Tosoh pursues GHG emissions reduction and the capture of CO2 and its conversion into raw materials through its CO2 Reduction and Effective Use Promotion Committee. Recently, we also established the CO2 Reduction and Effective Use Strategy team and Task Forces at the Nanyo and Yokkaichi Complexes to strengthen our system for promoting the reduction of GHG emissions.
